Art at the Point

Transition of an island

Bruny Island is on the verge of becoming Tasmania's art community. The Tasmanian Government initiative "living artists" in September 2007 has created the "bruny island artist trail" of eleven exhibitions on this small island. And the village of Dennes Point is due to become a hub of the arts with 19 local artists having exhibited their work in the village hall and thanks to generous Government funding an art gallery with cafe and store in the village centre will be established soon.

The arts started to blossom at the island in the nineties, when Bruny Island had attracted a variety of artists: painters, photographers and craft people, when Austrian actor, playwright and director Justus Neumann performed with the locals and still is on Bruny Island whenever time permits. Even Tasmania's renowned author Richard Flanagan enjoys retreating to his escape at North Bruny. Painters like Michaye Boulter, Liz Bennet and Helga Wenzel as well as her partner, travel writer and photographer Horst and a number of other artists had established their individual and independent working base on Bruny Island.

Less than ten years ago, these pioneers together with other fellow local artists, had exhibited their work at the inaugural Bruny Island art exhibition in Adventure Bay. The exhibition has been repeated annually and consequently has put Bruny Island on the map of the arts.

The transition of the island from a fishermen and farmer locality to an arty leisure island is nearing completion with the sea change phenomena luring established as well as emerging artists to the island, mainly former teachers, wanting to escape the rat race of the big cities on the mainland, keen to fulfil their ultimate dream of creating something new, a community to share their common interests in the arts on a paradise island. Meanwhile at Dennes Point the new movement has turned professional following the registration of the trademark "Art at the Point".
